Timeline

Located in Woolloongabba, an inner city of Brisbane, Salisbury House is reworked to enhance its connection to the garden and establish an enhanced sense of privacy and place inside. Maintaining single level, in keeping with the traditional cottage the residence has been expanded to the rear of the site in an attempt to maintain existing proportions so as not to disrupt the rhythm of the streetscape.
The architectural interventions consist of adding a conceptual wrap around veranda to the cottage consisting of new living, kitchen, dining & outdoor living areas in what clear intention of function and spatial sequence to support a calming interaction with the home and celebrate its compact nature.
The transition between old and new feels deliberate– the intent was about contrasting traditional and contemporary however, blending the eras to expand the functionality of the home. Though limited in size, detailing and palette, the residence emerges as clearly articulated Queenslander cottage with a modern pavilion like annex where dark and lighter elements coexist. The selections feel harmonious and offer a calming overtone throughout, particularly through an open connection to nature.
Whilst reminders of the past remain and bring the character and nostalgia of the structure’s handmade origins into the new, the movement through the home is reconfigured to centre around a more modern and openly connected lifestyle.
