Contemporary Terrace House Development

East Brisbane

Timeline
2017 - ongoing

This project is a successful example of medium density housing on an inner-city suburban block. A clever site strategy optimises the development yield by transforming a derelict cottage into one new freestanding house and two terrace houses while maintaining bulk and proportion of the neighbouring residential area.

Due to the relatively small block size of only 506m2 for three dwellings, the design maximises usability by double use of spaces. Large sliding doors allow part of the garage temporarily to be joined to the living areas to maximise the size of yard spaces. Dining tables are joined with kitchen island benches to not waste space on unnecessary corridors.

Cleverly placed skylights in the stair void area bring filtered light down at the centre of the living areas and help to avoid dark corridors. Simple contemporary volumes combined with traditional lightweight cladding pay respect to the local context and regional vernacular.
