Due to the island location the client and us opted for a pre-manufactured structural steel skeleton that was transported for installation and bolting together onsite. Dilligent coordination between the builder, then engineers and REFRESH* Architecture was essential for the location of trusses within walls; minimising the structural steel member sizes; and achieving the 4.5m cantilevered front deck.

Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island Beach House

Location
Stradbroke Island, QLD

Timeline

The intent for Baker Boys Beach House was to be reminiscent of the beach shack vernacular, as it was very typical for the Island in the 60s to 90s. Exploring the qualities of long term camping, this project intends to overcome the limitations of conventional houses. Sleeping and service facilities are confined in so called ‘pods’ which are placed beside a central area, which is covered by a light roof. Like camping, this arrangement provides an experience more similar to a shelter, than spending the day inside a house.

Located on a very steep slope, the back of the house is anchored to the ground, where it is well connected to the adjoining bushland reserve. The other end of the structure is cantilevered to take full advantage of the sweeping views, while providing covered space for car parking and storage facilities.
