AVEBURY

Flood resilient family home renovation in Hill End

Location
West End, QLD

Timeline
2022 - ongoing

Situated in the Brisbane Suburb of West End – an area renowned for its character houses Avebury is a modern take on the Queenslander Home.

Inspired by the origins of the existing timber home on the site, the new additions take form as both an expression of solid and void, establishing a series of levels that occupy a unique dual street front lot.

Avebury House has been designed and expanded to improve the internal connectivity and engagement with the surrounding landscape and connection to ground. As the house transitions from the original structure to the new extension, the design language shifts while maintaining a cohesive colour palette that unites both areas. The lightness of the new spaces enhances the welcoming atmosphere typical of homes from this era. An open-plan layout fosters fluidity, complemented by sculptural furniture that adds interest without overwhelming the spaces. Unlike the more defined front rooms, the open rear area balances the original design’s significance.

A central feature of the new design is a generous ground floor courtyard or undercroft, intentionally designed to be flooded without damaging any of the living spaces above. Materials are intentionally raw and robust and considered so that only minimal works are needed after extreme weather events. Avebury recognises the importance of climate adaptive design by doing so celebrates a family connection with place.

We're stoked to be working with Bespoke Constructions on this project.
